GPCA Adds North America, Australia and Sri Lanka to Global ‘Waste Free Environment’ Campaign

Dubai, United Arab Emirates; February 2017: The Gulf Petrochemicals and Chemicals Association’s (GPCA) Waste Free Environment (WFE) campaign has expanded into three new territories, adding the U.S., Australia and Sri Lanka to its global reach. Growing participation in the WFE initiative – now in its fifth year – encompasses 17 companies and thousands of volunteers across 14 nations.

The campaign’s expansion has been made possible through partnerships with Dow Chemical and Muntajat in North America and Australia respectively, while GPCA’s founding members Sabic and Borouge will be hosting events in China, The Netherlands and Singapore for the third year running.

In the U.A.E., to mark the anniversary and growth of the initiative, the GPCA will host a carnival in Dubai supported by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change and the Dubai Municipality for the fourth consecutive year.

The carnival event will include an educational playground of circuit-style stations offering volunteers an action-packed morning filled with competitions, games, quizzes and a magic show, in addition to clean-up activities.

The event is sponsored by Shell Chemicals, LyondellBasell, BASF, Cosmoplast and Taghleef Industries.

“We are pleased to work closely with the UAE Ministry of Environment and Dubai Municipality in spreading environmental awareness at a time when the U.A.E. is focusing on engaging and encouraging citizens to become more environmentally conscious,” said Dr. Abdulwahab Al-Sadoun, Secretary General, GPCA.

“Our industry is the second largest manufacturing industry in this region and the products the chemical industry produces here in the Arabian Gulf, plastics in particular, contribute significantly to our quality of life, resource preservation and innovation. These products should be responsibly disposed of, either via recycling or energy recovery. GPCA’s educational campaign WFE provides an excellent opportunity to work alongside the community to show that littering is not acceptable and help spread knowledge about eco-efficient waste management in general,” he continued.

Each WFE event is supported by a recycling partner to emphasize the main campaign message that plastic is too valuable to throw away and recycling reaps significant benefits. For the Dubai event, Bee’ah has come on board as the official recycling supporter who will help raise awareness on materials that can be recycled and report on the cleanup results.

WFE, which last year covered the cleanup of public spaces across 17 cities in 10 countries, across the GCC, The Netherlands, China, Singapore and India, won the title of ‘Best Corporate Social Responsibility Initiative of the Year’ at the 7th Oil and Gas and Refining and Petrochemicals Middle East Awards.

More than 11,000 volunteers joined hands to collect over 179 tons of waste, with recycling partners collaborating on the effective reutilization of waste. Along with the cleanup drive, the GPCA and its partners also incorporated a great focus on the educational element of the initiative, partnering with schools and raising awareness on the 3 R’s of waste disposal- Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

Similar WFE events in other GCC cities are hosted by some of the GCC’s top petrochemical companies, including SABIC, Sadara, Tasnee, S.A Talke, Sahara Petrochemicals and Natpet in KSA, Borouge and Takreer in UAE, EQUATE in Kuwait, Muntajat and Qapco in Qatar and, Orpic in Oman, and GPIC in Bahrain.
