Chemical industry is reaping the benefits from adopting Responsible Care®, say speakers during the event

Dubai, United Arab Emirates, 7 May 2018 – The chemical industry in the Arabian Gulf and globally is reaping significant benefits from adopting Responsible Care®, said speakers during the 2nd GPCA Responsible Care® Conference held on 6-8 May in the InterContinental, Dubai.

Since the adoption in the GCC of this unique global initiative dedicated to environment, health safety and security performance, the industry has reached new heights in their EHS&S performance, raising the bar in the region through continuous improvement. Held under the theme ‘Responsible Care® – The Competitive Advantage’, the conference will showcase best regional learnings across the chemical, petrochemical and logistics industries.

In his keynote address on the contribution of Responsible Care® to the bottom line, Eng. Khalid S. Al-Mudaifer, President and CEO, Ma’aden, spoke of how adopting the program helped achieve best practices within health, safety and environment, community engagement, local content, economic and social progress, among others.

Kate Holzhauser, VP, Environment, Health, Safety and Security (EHS&S), CP Chem, spoke of the transformative effects of Responsible Care® at Chevron Phillips, and how it helped the organization achieve safer operations and lower its environmental impact.

Dr. Abdulwahab Al-Sadoun, Secretary General, GPCA, said, “Over the last decade, GPCA has achieved global recognition for its adoption and implementation of Responsible Care®, which in 2017 was extended to regional Logistics Service Providers (LSPs) as well. Through the conference, we will learn from companies, including LSPs, who have achieved excellence and extensive competitive advantage through the adoption of Responsible Care®. These organizations are defining the industry’s future and supporting broader societal imperatives, including environment, health, safety and security.”

GPCA adopted Responsible Care® in December 2009 in line with its commitment to continually advance the sustainability agenda in the region’s chemical industry. Since 2010, GPCA has collected, aggregated and analyzed EHS&S metrics data, following international reporting standards from its full member companies. The valuable findings published annually in a performance metrics report offers the region learning opportunities and an excellent means of benchmarking EHS&S performance.

On the occasion of the event, GPCA will release its 5th Responsible Care® Performance Metrics Report ‘Promoting Continuous Improvement’, showcasing the milestones and achievements in sustainability and EHS&S by chemical companies in the Arabian Gulf. The data presented in the report is based on 21 individual performance metrics; with more than 70 per cent of GPCA members having undergone the independent RC14001 third party certification process.

The conference will host the 2nd GPCA Responsible Care® Excellence Awards on 7 May 2018, recognizing organizations that have demonstrated leadership and outstanding performance in the implementation and execution of Responsible Care® over a period of two years.
